Made a post on this blog entry: http://thetheologianscafe.xanga.com/733518790/are-gay-people-picked-on/
I've gotten sarcasm, "you're stupid" and "...." as responses to the post that I made.
Apparently because I don't think gays are picked on more than anybody else, I'm an idiotic b**ch.
You do realize that a few years back, it was all the Hispanics that were getting crap from everyone else because "illegal immigration" was the big issue. Hispanic, and Mexican in particular, has almost become synonymous in parts of California with "illegal alien." Is it fair? No. Is it true? Yes. Do I give a damn if the truth offends you? No, not really.
As for Gays--homosexuality is a preference. A liking for Vanilla Ice Cream is a preference. Are you going to know my preference for ice cream without me telling you, or without you observing me choose Vanilla every time I am given the chance? No, not unless you're psychic.
So if you don't like the same logic being applied to homosexuals--that you can't be teased for being a homosexual unless you make it known you are one--you really should not waste your time commenting unless it is with an intelligent rebuttal, in which case I might be willing to change my mind.
The only reason people think gays are teased and bullied more often is because they are the new "next big issue." How many illegal immigrant stories did you year this morning? Two years ago it would have been five times as many. They highlight what they think people are interested in knowing. There is no way they would have time to highlight EVERY act of prejudice and EVERY act of discrimination. So they pick and they chose based on what people are getting fired up over recently. =/ it gives it the illusion of being a bigger issue than it is...which is what many people LIKE because if we think it's a bigger issue, more gets done to change it.
Now, please understand, I'm not saying "Well, sh*t, they came out of the closet I guess that means they are fair game!" NO. That is not where I am going with this. It is NEVER acceptable to belittle someone because they are different than you...but I'm also not going to show someone pity if they took steps to reveal something about themselves KNOWING it would cause adversity. More power to you for being brave, but don't expect the world to be nicer to you because of your courage. It won't be.
The recent story in the news is a slightly special case, where he was secretly video-taped, and I am aware of that, which is why I was addressing homosexuals in a general sense. Not the "WELL, BUT, THIS ONE EXCEPTION--" save it. There are exceptions to every rule, I don't give a damn about the ONE you heard about.
